What is a Sunstone?

The sunstone is a fine gemstone (formerly known as a "semi-precious stone"). It is a gem with reddish-orange tones whose fine golden flakes shine in the sun. Its color is due to inclusions of copper and hematite. The main deposits are found in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, but it is also found in the United States, Canada, Russia, and Australia. Its summery color and golden reflections are highly appreciated in jewelry. It has a hardness between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
