History of Unakite
Etymology of the name Unakite is originally the stone "epidote", from the Greek "epidosis" meaning "competent". Unakite was named by René Just Haüy, a French mineralogist, in 1801. Much later, in 1874, an American geologist, Frank Howe Bradley, named this natural stone after the place where it was discovered, in the Unaka Mountains in North Carolina, USA.
Unfortunately, he had no information on Unakite, as it had only recently been discovered. Today, however, Unakite is widely used in jewelry.
Origin and composition of Unakite
Unakite belongs to the altered granite family. Unakite natural stone is mainly composed of calcium, aluminum and iron silicate, with the chemical formula Ca2(Al,Fe)3Si3O12(OH). The density of this stone is between 3.2 and 3.55.
Unakite stone forms mainly in metamorphic rocks that have undergone hydrothermal alteration. From this alteration, minerals are transformed into rocks such as granite.
Unakite is generally khaki green and reddish-pink in color. Depending on the quantity of minerals, these can influence the shades, which can be lighter and/or darker.

The main deposits ofUnakite are found in the USA, South Africa, Brazil, China and Russia.
The hardness of Unakite stone is around 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
