Agate: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Meaning and Recharging of the stone

Agate is one of the oldest gemstones. Agates are a variety of Chalcedony. They are known for their multitudes of colors and classic to extravagant shapes. This gives them an unparalleled range of virtues in lithotherapy, whether on the physical or spiritual level.

Agate can be white, gray to bluish gray, green, yellow-brown, brown, red or black. They can be easily tinted, especially if the Agates are porous. Therefore, it is also possible to proceed with a chemical bath to alter the different layers constituting the Agate and thus their color. The bright, full colors (uniform, not banded) of Agates show that they have been artificially colored.

History of Agate

Agate from the ancient Greek "Akhatês", is one of the oldest minerals known to man, discovered during antiquity. It was already used to make tools. Agate was named by Theophrastus, when he found it in Sicily in the year 300 BC, near the river formerly called "Achates" in Latin and now called Dirillo.

Agate has often been associated with mythologies; for example, in Greek mythology, the stone was associated with Gaia, the goddess of earth and nature. In Celtic mythology, it was Ceridwen, the goddess of fertility and death. Or, in Roman mythology, Aurora, the goddess of light and day.

Since ancient times, Agate has been popular, mostly for its diverse colors and multiple shapes. It was mainly used for the creation of jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets and decorative objects like vases.

Currently, Agate remains indispensable in the world of jewelry or for the creation of artistic objects. It is also used for its virtues in lithotherapy.

Composition and Origin of Agate

Agate is a variety of Chalcedony. Its main composition is silicon dioxide (SiO2). Its density varies between 2.58 and 2.64 depending on the species of Agates.

We note that Agate has many unique colors and patterns that are due to the presence of inclusions and mineral impurities such as iron, chromium, copper, manganese..

Agates are formed on and/or within pre-existing low temperature rocks and are often located in cavities in volcanic rocks. These cavities are formed by gases trapped within the volcanic fluid. The hydrothermal fluids trapped inside these cavities crystallize and form the Agate.

Origin and hardness of Agate

We can find Agate throughout the world, but the main deposits are currently located in southern Brazil, northern Uruguay and Canada, particularly at Mount Lyall.

The hardness of the stone varies between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is considered a fairly hard stone.

Virtues and Meaning of Agate

Agate is a stone of anchorage, concentration and balance. It is highly valued for its soothing power and is used to calm psychic and emotional torments. Each color of Agate stone can be associated with a virtue. You can therefore choose your Agate stone according to your personality and/or your needs:

- For red to orange colors, Agate will stimulate energy and improve work.

- For green colors, the stone will be a source of progress.

- For light or soft colors and graceful stripes, it will symbolize safety and help in the quest for tranquility.

- For multicolored colors with bright shapes, Agate will allow an opening of mind and renewal.

- For bright colors with simple lines, it will strengthen the concentration.

Agate in lithotherapy

On the physical level, Agate is known for its relaxing and healing actions. The stone soothes joint or muscle pain. It can be used to treat skin problems, including acne, minor irritations or to help healing. Agate also improves the connection between body and mind. Finally, this stone can stimulate sex life and enhance fulfillment.

On the psychic level, Agate has soothing properties, it guides you on the path to tranquility and peace. This stone balances your energy, enhances concentration and stabilizes emotions.

Each Agate is different in color and shape, so many chakras can be assimilated on a spiritual level. It is mainly associated with the heart chakra to express positive thoughts.

- For the red, orange, yellow and black colors, these are the sacral, root and solar plexus chakras, which focus on sexuality, energy and creativity.

- For green colors, it is the heart chakra, which promotes positive emotions such as benevolence or love.

- For the purple and blue colors, these are the throat and third eye chakras, which stimulate the state of mind and improve communication.

- For translucent colors, it is the coronal chakra. This one helps to improve the spiritual state and empathy.

Note that lithotherapy cannot replace medical treatment or medical expertise.

The main astrological signs associated with Agate are Leo and Scorpio. Nevertheless, Agate is a multitude of stone, color and shape, which is why it can harmonize with the signs of Virgo, Gemini, Libra, Aquarius, Cancer and Taurus.

Agate can be associated with the birth month of May, as an alternative to Emerald.
