Origin and composition of Amazonite
Amazonite is a mineral belonging to the group of potassium feldspars known as microcline, with the following chemical composition KAlSi3O8, which is polymorphic to orthoclase. Amazonite has a specific gravity of around 2.56 to 2.58.
Amazonite stone forms in pegmatites, veins and other cavities. These underground locations are ideal for the crystallization and growth of Amazonite. Depending on the size of the amazonite recovered from these cavities, the stones can be used as cabochons, beads or even cut stones.
Previously, it was thought that the color of Amazonite was due to copper, but recent studies suggest that the color of Amazonite stone is actually due to a lack of lead and water.
Origin of Amazonite stone
Amazonite can be found in South Africa, India and Russia, but the main deposits are in the United States, more specifically in Colorado, Brazil and Madagascar.
Amazonite's hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
