The stone's history is poorly documented, as it was discovered only recently. Sugilite was first discovered on the island of Kyushu, Japan. Later, other Sugilite deposits were discovered in South Africa, Australia and India.
Origin and composition of Sugilite stone
Sugilite belongs to the Cyclosilicate family. It is mainly composed of potassium and lithium silicate, iron, manganese and aluminum, with a chemical composition of KNa2Li3(Fe, Mn, Al)2Sil2O30. The stone has a specific gravity of around 2.75.
Sugilite generally forms in metamorphic rocks and veins of igneous minerals. It forms in manganese-rich zones and in low-temperature environments.
Sugilite's characteristic violet color is due to the presence of manganese ions in its composition. Color shades can vary from pale pink to dark purple to crimson. Sugilite natural stone can also have patterns such as spots or veins in black, gray or white due to different inclusions.
