Smoky Quartz : History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Meaning and Recharging of the stone
Smoky Quartz is a translucent stone with dark hues. There are deposits of the stone all over the world. It is an ancient and mystical stone, used for thousands of years for its therapeutic and spiritual properties. It is considered an anchor stone that can help balance emotional and mental energies. It can also help calm disturbing emotions and thoughts, improve self-confidence and personal security.
History of Smoky Quartz
The name "Quartz" is said to come from the German word "qewärz", which means "growth", referring to the shape of the crystals. It is likely to derive from the Slavic word "kwardy", meaning "hard" or "solid", referring to the hardness of the mineral. While the term smoky derives its name from its brown hue.
The stone of Smoky Quartz was discovered thousands of years ago and has been used since ancient times for various purposes. In the 12th century, the Chinese made sunglasses using smoky quartz lenses. In the 19th century, psychics used smoky quartz spheres to predict the future.
Origin and Composition of Smoky Quartz
Smoky Quartz is a translucent variety of quartz whose color generally varies from light beige to dark brown and sometimes black. The stone belongs to the family of silica crystals, also called silicon dioxide. Its chemical composition is SiO2. The density of the Smoky Quartz stone is 2.65g /cm3.
In terms of reflection, Smoky Quartz can show iridescence or color reflections, although this depends on the quality of the stone and how it is cut. This stone is generally less bright and shiny than other varieties of quartz, such as rock crystal or rose quartz.
The natural stone Smoky Quartz forms mainly in the cavities of certain rocks, such as basalt and granite, when they are subjected to high temperatures and pressures. The crystallization of minerals dissolved in the groundwater takes place progressively in these cavities, giving rise to quartz crystals.
Smoky quartz can be found in a variety of geological settings, including:
- Within magmatic and igneous rocks, such as pegmatites ;
- In sedimentary rocks ;
- In the alpine cracks ;
- Within the hydrothermal veins.
The color of Smoky Quartz results from the presence of trace amounts of aluminum and exposure to natural radiation from minerals such as uranium and thorium. The staining occurs when warm groundwater, rich in dissolved minerals, flows through the rocks at depth and cools as it rises to the surface. During this process, the silicon molecules in the water join together and crystallize to form quartz crystals. This phenomenon, known as the hydrothermal process, is responsible for the formation of many minerals, including smoky quartz.
We can distinguish two varieties of smoky quartz according to its color:
- The Quartz Morion, is the black or very dark brown variety of Smoky Quartz, the color is caused by impurities such as carbon particles.
- As for the Cairngorm Quartz, discovered in the eponymous mountains in Scotland and presents colors ranging from yellow to brown. Its coloring results from the presence of iron particles.
Origin of the Smoky Quartz Crystal
Smoky Quartz is a commonly encountered natural stone, which forms in a variety of geological settings as mentioned above. The main deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Scotland (where the Cairngorm variety is located), Switzerland and Ukraine. In France, the Haute-Vienne region is also famous for its imposing morion quartz crystals, particularly in the Monts d'Ambazac.
Smoky Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, which means it is hard enough to resist scratching.
