Sillimanite: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Meaning and Refill of the stone

Sillimanite is a member of the Silicate family. Its rarity makes it a highly prized stone in the world of jewelry and especially in the world of lithotherapy. Its soothing and protective virtues help us to refocus on ourselves and bring greater harmony and introspection to body and mind.

History of Sillimanite

The name Sillimanite was named after Benjamin Silliman, a famous American mineralogist and chemist. Sillimanite is also known by a variety of names, either related to its fibrous, pearly appearance ("Fribrolite") or to other mineralogists, such as the Frenchman Jacques Louis de Bournon ("Bournonite"), the German Bucholtz ("Bucholzite") or "Monroelite", in reference to the town of Monroe in the USA.

This mineral was first described by Norman Levi Bowen.

Sillimanite is a relatively rare stone, less well known than other minerals, and has not played an important role in the history of different cultures and civilizations. However, it is appreciated for its beneficial properties in lithotherapy. Sillimanite is also prized for its beauty and rarity.

Origin and composition of Sillimanite stone

Sillimanite belongs to the Silicate family, more precisely to the anhydrous alumina silicate family. It is mainly composed of aluminum silicate with the chemical formula [SiO4]Al2O Al, [SiO4]Al4Al6O. Its density is approximately 3.23.

Sillimanite stone generally forms in high-temperature, high-pressure metamorphic rocks such as schists and gneisses. It is also present in certain igneous and sedimentary rocks.

Sillimanite is generally gray, green, brown, blue or yellow in color. The different colors of this natural stone are mainly due to traces of elements or impurities present in its crystalline structure. The stone is relatively rare and difficult to identify. In its purest form, it may be white or colorless. It is also possible for some Sillimanites to exhibit chatoyancy.

Tinted sillimanite is also available. Sillimanite stones are immersed in the dye solution and heated to a specific temperature for a set period of time. The heat allows the dyes to penetrate deeper into the stone's microscopic pores and fissures, resulting in a more uniform, long-lasting hue. Sillimanite is often colored in the hues of gemstones such as Sapphire, Emerald or Ruby, to achieve more affordable prices.

The main deposits of Sillimanite are found in Germany, Brazil, India, Italy and Sri Lanka.

Sillimanite has a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
