The name Shungite comes from a village called Shunga, in the republic of Karelia in northwest Russia.

According to Russian legend, the emperor Gemstone the Great was very interested in various medicines and built the first thermal baths on Shungite deposits. He is said to have recommended Shungite-based elixirs known as "Waters of Mars" to counter certain infections and illnesses. He then decided to spend his last years living close to a thermal spring to treat and relieve his ailments. Subsequent studies and research showed that the water in the Martsialnye Vody thermal spring contained fullerenes, which, after several analyses, were found to be beneficial to the body, thanks in particular to their antioxidant properties.

To this day, there are still many mysteries surrounding Shungite, not least its formation. Hypotheses suggest several theories on the subject. However, despite this, many people appreciate it and use it for a variety of purposes, such as jewellery-making or for its anti-electromagnetic properties.

Shungite belongs to no single family, due to its unique composition. It is composed mainly of carbon and silicon dioxide. The stone's density generally varies between 2.1 and 2.4.

The process by which Shungite was formed remains a mystery, but it is suggested that this natural stone was formed from the decomposition and transformation of microorganisms and organic matter in sedimentary deposits of organic origin.

Shungite is known for its black color, which is the most commonly found and mined. However, silver shungite can also be found, a very rare form with reddish-brown veins, mixed with iron sulfate.

Shungite can be mined mainly in Russia. However, recent deposits have appeared in Kazakhstan and India with characteristics similar to Shungite, but not necessarily of the same rarity as that of the Karelian region.

Shungite's hardness generally ranges between 3.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale. However, it should be borne in mind that hardness can vary according to composition and carbon content.
