The natural stone Rutile Quartz comes from the Latin "rutilus" meaning "red". The name was coined by German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner in the 1800s.

Rutile quartz is a member of the quartz family. The stone is mainly composed of titanium dioxide with the chemical formula TiO2 and has a specific gravity of approx. 2.65.
Natural Rutile Quartz stone is formed from metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks and hydrothermal veins. Depending on its geographic location, Rutile Quartz is formed for a variety of reasons, including temperature, pressure, minerals and crystallization.
Although quartz itself can be colorless, the impurities it contains can tint it in different colors. Add to that, the inclusions of rutile that can be golden, silver, copper, or black, giving it its "striped" aspects inside the stone. From these inclusions, Rutilated Quartz is also nicknamed "angel hair", "Venus hair" or "love arrow".
There are many varieties of Rutilated Quartz around the world, and each of them is formed due to different impurities:
- Red Rutilated Quartz, contains Iron, which gives a reddish-brown aspect to rutile
- Blue Rutilated Quartz, contains Niobium, giving a green to blue color
- Black Rutilated Quartz, due to the presence of titanium dioxide, giving it a black, silver to gray aspect
