Rhodonite: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Meaning and Refill of the stone
Rhodonite is a stone from the Pyroxenoid family. Its color and etymology strongly resemble Rhodochrosite, yet these two natural stones remain totally different from one another in their chemical compositions, crystal structures and physical properties. Rhodonite is very popular for its beneficial properties in lithotherapy. It brings serenity and soothes the user's body and mind.
History of Rhodonite
The stone Rhodonite takes its name from the ancient Greek "rhodon", meaning rose, and the suffix "-ite", naming the mineral.
Rhodonite was highly prized by the Romans and Greeks, who used it as a protective amulet. Its soothing color gives this natural stone an emotional symbolism, and it is often given as a gift to signify friendship and benevolence.
During the Renaissance, some works referred to Rhodonite as providing lithotherapy benefits such as joy, intelligence and improved memory.
This natural stone was highly prized in Russia, particularly in the 19th century. It is said that Tsar Alexander II had a 49-ton Rhodonite tomb built for his late wife, Maria Alexandrovna. Subsequently, many elements are used or adorned in Rhodonite, for example, columns, statues, vases and mosaics in the St. Petersburg palace are adorned in Rhodonite.
Origin and composition of Rhodonite
Rhodonite comes from the Pyroxenoid family. It is mainly composed of manganese metasilicate, with the chemical formula MnSiO3. Rhodonite's specific gravity ranges from 3.4 to 3.7.
Rhodonite generally forms in metamorphic rocks and metasomatic deposits. In metamorphic rocks, natural stone is formed as a function of temperature and high pressure. In metasomatic deposits, rhodonite is formed between the minerals in a rock and the surrounding fluids, which trigger a chemical reaction that changes the rock's mineralogical composition.
Rhodonite has an opaque reddish-pink hue most of the time, but its color can vary depending on the inclusions, which give it a pale pink to dark red hue.
Rhodonite's origin
The main deposits of Rhodonite are found in South Africa, Australia, Canada, the United States, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Brazil and Russia.
Rhodonite has a hardness of around 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
