Rhodochrosite: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Significance and Recharging of the stone
Rhodochrosite is a natural stone from the carbonate family. It has long been appreciated for its beauty and pinkish color. As a result, Rhodochrosite is mainly used in jewelry or for ornamental purposes. What's more, its lithotherapy benefits make this natural stone even more appreciated.
History of Rhodochrosite
The name Rhodochrosite comes from the ancient Greek "rhodon" meaning "rose" and "kroma" meaning "color".
Rhodochrosite was first discovered under the Inca Empire in early 13th-century Argentina. This natural stone was found in an ancient silver and copper mine, which was eventually forgotten when the empire fell.
Legend has it that Rhodochrosite natural stone was found on the sacred shores of Lake Titicaca, and that the Ajllas temple, home to the sun god Inti and his priestesses, was located high up in the mountains. No one was allowed to enter, until the day a warrior named Canqui Tupac stumbled upon the site and met the beautiful priestess Nusta Ajlla. Love at first sight struck and the two fell madly in love. From this forbidden love, they decided to flee. The Emperor, angered by this news, sent armies in search of the two lovers. The two lived happily in hiding for a very long time. Later, Nusta gave birth to many children. When she died, she was buried in a mountain and Canqui, saddened by her death, turned to stone. Years later, a shepherd happened to come across some magnificent blood-red stones in the shape of rose petals. He took one to the Inca Emperor, who was touched by the story and named the stone "Rosa del Inca", which became a symbol of forgiveness, loyalty, love and sacrifice.
Years later, the mines were found and the natural Rhodochrosite stone rediscovered. The French mineralogist Abbé René Just Haüy called it "carbonated oxidized manganese" in his compendium entitled Tableau méthodique des espèces minérales. A few years later, the natural stone was renamed "rhodochrosite" by the German geologist Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, which was also approved by the IMA.
Rhodochrosite was a runaway success in the 1930s, thanks to the German Franz Mansfeld, who obtained samples of the stone for polishing, then introduced them to the rest of the world, starting with England. After several years, Mansfeld sent for tons of Rhodochrosite, which he polished and cut. Franz went on to exhibit his work, which left its mark on the world and intensively increased the popularity of Rhodochrosite, which also became the national stone of Argentina and the official stone of the US state of Colorado .
