History of Mother-of-pearl

For thousands of years Mother-of-Pearl also known as the "mother of pearls", has fascinated and bewitched civilizations the world over. Used since Antiquity, it adorns jewelry, objets d'art and musical instruments. During the Middle Ages, mother-of-pearl was prized for buttons and religious ornaments. Throughout the ages, this natural material has remained a symbol of luxury and timeless elegance.

Beyond its remarkable aesthetic appeal, mother-of-pearl holds important symbolism in many cultures. It is often associated with purity, femininity, protection and prosperity. It is also believed to have soothing and purifying properties, and is sometimes used in lithotherapy. The ancient Egyptians, for example, incorporated mother-of-pearl into their ornaments and ritual objects, believing it to possess magical properties.

What is Mother-of-Pearl?

Mother-of-Pearl is a composite organic-inorganic substance produced by certain molluscs, mainly oysters and abalone. It is composed mainly of mineral layers of aragonite (a polymorph of calcium carbonate) and conchyoline, an organic protein. These layers are arranged to create an extremely resistant and durable stratified structure, which gives nacre its characteristic iridescent lustre. Mother-of-pearl is renowned for its resistance to fracture, a quality that derives from its unique micro-lamellar structure, making this material both strong and light.

Mother-of-pearl's hardness is between 3.5 and 4.5 on the Mohs scale. Although not as hard as minerals such as quartz or diamond, mother-of-pearl has a unique structure that makes it resistant to fracture and wear, thanks to its composition of microscopic layers of aragonite and conchyoline.

Colors and shades of Mother-of-pearl

Mother-of-Pearl is available in an infinite range of colors and shades, from immaculate white to bluish, pinkish, green and even golden reflections. These color variations result from the complex structure of mother-of-pearl, which interferes with light to create fascinating optical effects. Each shell has its own unique palette, making each piece of mother-of-pearl truly one-of-a-kind.
