History, origin and virtues of Akoya pearls: The most Luxurious pearls in the world
History and origin of Akoya pearls
Akoya pearls are a type of saltwater cultured pearl with a perfectly round, smooth and iridescent surface. Akoya pearls were mainly found in Japan, China, Cambodia and the Philippines. They were used to reward high-ranking members of society who had been diligent in their duties. Akoya beads are also believed to bring divine blessing to their owner and were therefore worn by emperors.
The first Akoya pearl was discovered off the coast of Japan in 1697. The emperor gave it to his wife, but she did not like it because it was too ordinary. After seeing the pearl on display at a market, she decided that the pearl would be perfect if it could be dyed in colour. They dyed the pearl using vegetable dyes which gave it bright colours of red, green, blue and yellow. The Japanese loved their new discovery and their country was soon dubbed "the land of Akoya pearls" because of the wide range of colours available.
How are Akoya beads made?
Akoya pearls are saltwater-grown pearls, which explains their natural iridescence. They are created from a small mother-of-pearl bead that is inserted into the Akoya oyster. This action triggers its defence mechanism, which causes it to secrete nacre around the bead. The pearl is then removed from the oyster after 6 months to 2 years. The average diameter of an Akoya pearl is 6 to 8 mm, and more exceptionally, pearls up to almost 10 mm are found, the rarest ones!
Composition of Akoya pearls
The composition of Akoya pearls consists of a layer of mother-of-pearl with a fine calcium carbonate shell. Their unique surface reflects light, giving them their natural iridescence and dense appearance.
The most important thing to remember about Akoya pearls is that they are saltwater cultured pearls and should not be worn in fresh or chlorinated water.
