Larimar: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Meaning and Recharging of the stone
Larimar is a rare stone found only in the Dominican Republic. The stone is also known as "blue pectolite", and its color is often reminiscent of the sea or sky, with its soft blue hues and white patterns. Larimar is highly prized in the world of jewelry and lithotherapy for its soothing virtues.
History of Larimar
The Larimar stone takes its name from the first name "Larissa" and the Spanish "mar" meaning "sea". Larissa is the name of the daughter of its discoverer, Miguel Méndez, a Dominican jeweller.
Discovered for the 1st time by a priest named Miguel Domingo Fuertes de Loren in 1916, the stone went unrecognized and it wasn't until 1974 that Larimar was truly discovered and mined. As a result, several myths have sprung up around this magnificent blue stone.
Larimar is said to be linked to the legend of Atlantis, and as a result, Larimar can be found under the name of the Atlantis Stone. A 19th-century American prophet, Edgar Caye, is said to have predicted the arrival of a healing blue stone from Atlantis. Larimar was discovered a few years later, after Caye's death.
Today, Larimar gemstones are very expensive to obtain, due to their rarity and their beauty as a reflection of ocean water.
Larimar's origin and composition
Larimar belongs to the Pectolite variety. It is mainly composed of calcium-sodium silicate with the chemical formula Ca2Na[OH|Si3O8]. The stone's density ranges from 2.7 to 2.85.
Larimar forms in volcanic deposits, basalt and andesite zones, which are rich in calcium and sodium.
Larimar can be found in different varieties, depending on the amount of copper mixed with the stone:
- Light-blue larimar, the most common variety due to the presence of copper,
- Blue-green larimar, this variety gives the stone shades of blue and green due to copper inclusions,
- White larimar, the rarest variety, which is almost completely white due to its white calcite inclusions.
Larimar's origin
To date, the only and largest deposit of Larimar is in the mountains near Los Chupaderos, in the Dominican Republic. Larimar's hardness varies between 4.5 and 5 on the Mohs scale.
