Diopside: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Significance and Recharging of the stone
Diopside is a natural stone from the Pyroxene family. Its magnificent translucent green color is often confused with gemstones, particularly emeralds. Diopside is often used in jewelry because of its abundance and affordability. This natural Diopside stone provides considerable support for vulnerable people in lithotherapy.
History of Diopside
The etymology of Diopside comes from the Greek "di" meaning "two" and "opsis" meaning "sight", so the stone means "two views" or "two aspects". Diopside stone is so named because its appearance changes according to the angle from which it is viewed.
Diopside was first discovered in 1800, by a Brazilian politician named José Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva. Subsequently, the natural stone fell into oblivion, only reappearing in the 1980s. It then became highly prized by buyers and jewellers for its affordability. Today, it is still widely used in jewelry and appreciated for its lithotherapy benefits.
It is said that certain South American cultures associate this natural Diopside stone with inner peace and better sleep.
Legend has it that Diopside symbolizes the origin and development of life, having fallen from the tree of life.
Origin and composition of Diopside
Diopside belongs to the Pyroxene family. This natural stone is mainly composed of calcium and magnesium silicate, with the chemical formula Ca(MgFe)SiO6. Diopside has a specific gravity of between 3.2 and 3.4.
Diopside stone forms in many geological environments, including metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks, veins and the earth's mantle. Diopside generally forms under high pressure and temperature, then crystallizes once cooled.
Diopside is generally known for its greenish color, but there are several varieties:
- Diopside Chromifère: the presence of chromium gives it its intense green color,
- Diopside Etoilée: hematite and/or rutile inclusions give a starry effect to this black natural stone when cut into cabochon shapes,
- Diopside Violane: a bluish-purple to bluish-gray color due to iron and titanium impurities,
- Tashmarine: light to dark greenish-yellow, depending on impurities (e.g. chromium, iron)
Origin of Diopside
Diopside is found in numerous deposits around the world, but the varieties vary according to geographic zone. These stones are mainly found in South Africa, Brazil and Madagascar. As for the varieties of this natural stone, you can find Tashmarine in China, Diopside Violane in Italy, Diopside Etoilee in India and Diopside Chromifère in Russia.
The hardness of Diopside stone varies between 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale.
