Charoïte is a stone from the Silicate family, found only in one region of the world, Eastern Siberia. This natural stone is unique for its purifying properties in lithotherapy. But also, thanks to its enchanting, soul-soothing violet hues.
History of Charoïte
The name of the stone Charoïte comes from its location, the Chara River, where it was first discovered in Eastern Siberia. Moreover, the Russian word "chary" means "charm".
Natural Charoïte stone is found only in Russia, and its limited extraction and rarity make it a rare stone. Discovered in the 1940s, Charoïte was only described and analyzed 31 years later, in the 1970s.
In the mid-70s, Yuri Rogov, a Russian mineralogist, travelled to Paris with a piece of Charoïte, asking if any experts were familiar with the stone. Unfortunately, none could answer, concluding that this natural stone was still unknown.
Today, the stone is highly coveted by collectors for its unique patterns and colors.
Origin and composition Charoïte
Charoïte is a member of the Silicate family. This natural stone is composed of hydrosilicate of potassium, sodium, calcium, barium and strontium. Charoïte natural stone is a complex silicate with the chemical formula K5Ca8(Si6O15)2(Si2O7)Si4O9(OH)-3(H2O). Its density is around 2.56.
Charoïte stone is formed mainly in the metasomatic rocks of certain massifs such as Murun. It is formed by a chemical mixture of several minerals at a high pressure and temperature of around 200° to 250°C.
Charoïte natural stone is generally violet in color and, depending on its mineral content, can vary from intense violet to pale lilac, with white, gray or black veins. The stone can be translucent and/or opaque.
Origin of Charoïte
The only site where Charoïte is in Eastern Siberia, not far from Lake Baikal. However, access remains particularly difficult and limits its exploitation considerably, as the stone is found in one of the most hostile environments on Earth.
Charoite has a hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
