Carnelian: History, Origin, Composition, Virtues, Meaning and Recharging of the stone

The stone Carnelian is a stone from the Chalcedony family. Its flamboyant orange-red color soothes the heart and brings a feeling of warmth and happiness. Carnelian catches the eye not only for its color, but also for its lithotherapeutic virtues, notably its creative aspect.

Two hypotheses have been put forward as to the origin of the stone's name Carnelian:

- The other says it derives from the Latin "carneus"which means "flesh", referring to its color, similar to that of carnelian.

In the 16th century, the name was definitively changed to "Carnelian".

Carnelian stone has been used since the dawn of time, starting in ancient Egypt as a precious stone. Offering for the funeral goddess, Isis, for helping the deceased cross over to the beyond. The Egyptians used the stone to make headdress accessories, or in talisman to protect the pharaohs. Moreover, they often associated Carnelian with the sun god, the all-powerful god of ancient Egypt, as its color recalled the rising and setting of the sun.

During the Middle Ages, in Asia, the Tibetans used Carnelian for its lithotherapeutic virtues, including its anti-inflammatory and protective properties. In China, stone was used as a pigment to decorate artistic objects.

In the East, stone was used Elixir for its properties toning and astringent.

While in Europe, women appreciated Carnelian for its comforting qualities, making them more attractive.

Origin and composition of carnelian stone

The natural stone Carnelian belongs to the chalcedony family, a microcrystalline quartz variety. It is mainly composed of silicon dioxide with the formula (SiO2), and may include inclusions of aluminum and silica. Carnelian has a density of 2.6.

Carnelian's color intensity can vary according to its iron oxide content, from orange to red to yellow. The higher the the higher the iron concentration, the brighter the carnelian color. Sunlight or strong heat, such as stone heating, can also intensify the color.

Carnelian is mostly found in cavities in low-temperature volcanic zones. It is formed from silica dissolved in groundwater, which crystallizes into microcrystals. Iron and manganese oxides in the water give carnelian its orange-red color.

The stone can be mistaken for Sardoine, a stone from the same family. To distinguish between the two stones, pay close attention to color and appearance. Carnelian has a bright color and can be translucent to half-opaque (orange to red). Sardoine, on the other hand, is darker in color (brown) and much less translucent.

The main deposits in Carnelian are located in Brazil, India, Madagascar and Uruguay.

The hardness of the stone is 7 on the Mohs scale.
